In the Los Angeles Unified School District, Pilot Schools are a network of public schools that have autonomy over budget, staffing , governance, curriculum & assessment, and the school calendar.

Los Angeles High School of the Arts is the first Pilot School at LAUSD, serving as a non-auditioned neighborhood theatre arts high school at RFK. As such, our Strategic Arts Plan--policies, procedures, guidelines, and deadlines--was written into our Governance Plan and has been evaluated frequently, including during School Plan Evaluations, Linked Learning Certification, and WASC accreditation. We have extensively analyzed the instruction and curriculum within the Arts program and the collaboration with other content areas to continuously evaluate the effectiveness.
LAHSA has created a set of six school wide learning outcomes, including Arts, that guide our curriculum and our students’ learning in academics as well as Career Technical Education, which serves as a guide for LAHSA’s curriculum including integration of arts, scheduling, and alignment.

As LAUSD’s first Linked Learning Certified pathway, our Arts program encourages students to find their voice through exposure to the Theatre Arts while preparing students for college and career. Additionally, students are exposed to electives such as: acting, directing, AutoCAD, set design, costume design, lighting and sound design.
Despite our small size, our students can take all their A-G courses along with many AP courses. The most unique part of our scheduling is in the students’ Arts sequencing. All 9th graders take one semester of each and then choose a specialization for the next three years. In the 11th and 12th grade years, students may take additional Theatre electives that give them the chance to experience the other pathway. Enrollment reports and class rosters show that English learners and Students with Disabilities all equally participate in the Arts Curriculum.
